OMO Uma Canggu is a boutique beachfront hotel in one of Bali’s newest coastal tourism destinations, located directly along the vibrant shoreline of Canggu. Originally designed as an apartment development, the project later shifted direction when the client secured a partnership with COMO Hotels & Resorts, a globally renowned luxury hospitality operator. This shift required a conceptual transformation, reimagining the entire development into a fully operational boutique hotel.
The initial scheme consisted of 67 spacious suite units, including 12 penthouses with private rooftop pools, all oriented toward the ocean, while ground-floor rooms enjoyed direct access to an expansive lagoon pool. With the introduction of COMO as operator, the client strategically added more rooms to reach an economically viable key count for hotel operations. The final composition now comprises 127 guest rooms, balancing suites, penthouses, and standard units.
To ensure the architecture remained sensitive to its beachfront context, the hotel is designed as a composition of separate building blocks connected by corridors. This approach breaks down the overall massing, avoiding an overly massive appearance and creating a more human-scaled environment that blends more naturally with the surroundings. The extensive lagoon pool at the ground level enhances the experience for rooms without ocean views, offering a serene and luxurious alternative.
The architectural language embraces a modern tropical style, featuring sloped roofs, local natural materials, and soft, earthy tones. Notably, the project introduced one of Bali’s first vertical garden applications, adding lushness to the façades and reinforcing a biophilic sensibility. These design choices aim to create a resort that is refined, sensitive to the environment, and free from artificiality—true to COMO’s understated and contemporary aesthetic.
COMO Uma Canggu ultimately stands as a coastal retreat that unites thoughtful tropical design, a strong hospitality concept, and a deep connection to the evolving lifestyle culture of Canggu.
The design of COMO Uma Canggu evolves from the transformation of an apartment development into a boutique beachfront hotel that reflects COMO’s calm, contemporary, and understated philosophy. Positioned directly on Canggu’s shoreline, the architecture is shaped to celebrate the ocean—every building mass, suite, and penthouse is oriented to capture light, breeze, and the ever-changing coastal panorama.
To avoid a monolithic presence along the beach, the hotel is arranged as a series of separated building blocks connected through gently flowing corridors. This approach breaks down the scale, making the property feel more permeable, human, and responsive to its environment. The expansive lagoon pool at ground level enriches the experience for rooms without ocean views, creating a tranquil waterscape at the heart of the resort.
The architectural vocabulary is rooted in modern tropical design, expressed through sloped roofs, natural materials, and soft, earthy tones. Early adoption of vertical gardens adds a lush layer to the façade, blending built form and landscape in a way that feels natural and unforced.
Overall, the design narrative focuses on simplicity, sincerity, and connection to place—crafting a coastal sanctuary where COMO’s signature serenity meets the dynamic lifestyle culture of Canggu.
